Apparently even trendy people are playing role-playing games now!<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-858 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nortoncreekpress.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/steed.dand_.jpg?resize=649%2C432\" alt=\"\" width=\"649\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nortoncreekpress.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/steed.dand_.jpg?w=649&amp;ssl=1 649w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nortoncreekpress.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/steed.dand_.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the years after I wrote <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nortoncreekpress.com\/wordpress\/other-books\/through-dungeons-deep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Through Dungeons Deep: A Fantasy Gamers&#8217; Handbook<\/a>, one thing that&#8217;s surprised me is how well the old-school role-playing games have held up, and how few important changes have been made in the newer editions. One thing that surprises me is that tabletop role-playing games are still done almost entirely by hand, with little in the way of apps to assist with the mechanics, dice, and table lookups. It&#8217;s still 1980 that way. But that&#8217;s okay. 1980 is a great vintage for role-playing games.<\/p>\n<p>In the New Yorker article, it mentions that some people are using role-playing games therapeutically, especially with kids, building a variety of skills more or less incidentally to the fascinating play. I&#8217;ve actually done a little of this, hosting several sessions at Corvallis&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.socialcommunicationclinic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social Communications Clinic<\/a>, with a group of middle-school kids. It was exactly as much fun as a barrel of monkeys!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2hb5J5J\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-107\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nortoncreekpress.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/tdd_cover_simple.jpg?resize=82%2C128\" alt=\"\" width=\"82\" height=\"128\" \/><\/a>Though dating from the early Eighties, <em>Through Dungeons Deep<\/em> is back in print, through the miracle of, &#8220;it&#8217;s my company and I can publish what I want.&#8221; But it still gets excellent reviews. So check out <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2i667lw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dungeons &amp; Dragons<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2hb5J5J\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Through Dungeons Deep<\/a>, or both!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The New Yorker just published an article, The Uncanny Resurrection of Dungeons &amp; Dragons.
